What to expect on your first visit

On your first visit to our office, you can expect a through consultation and examination with the doctor. This allows the doctor to evaluate not only your current problem but your health history. This is needed to best decide what treatments and therapies are best suited for you individually.

When you arrive you will be welcomed and then given a few forms to be filled out (you can also fill them out by clicking the link above). After completing the needed forms, one of the Doctors’ assistants will bring you back and take your vital signs and take your picture for our medical records. After this, you will be taken into the doctor’s office. You will sit down, one on one with the doctor and discuss your current health issues, as well as past health problems, other health concerns, or questions you may have about your care.  It is important that you bring any old images, blood tests, or other diagnostic labs with you.

Following your consultation, you will have an examination. What the examination entails is based on your health history and current problems. If needed, you may also have additional laboratory testing, Ultrasound, genetics, EKG, Spirometery, x-rays or other diagnostics performed. This is decided on a per patient basis and by no means do all patients need to have these things performed on a first visit.

In either your first visit or a follow-up visit if you require lab tests, the doctor will explain the findings of your examination, as well as what your care will involve. You and the doctor will determine what therapies are best for you.  We try and create a team effort at Gateway Natural Medicine and want the patient involved as much as possible. If your current complaints require that we start treatment, you will receive your first treatment or procedure on that same day.

What to expect if the Doctor orders laboratory tests

If the doctor needs blood work as a part of your care, we have an onsite lab in our office. You will have the blood drawn here. Occasionally, there are other tests that you will take home and bring back to us upon completion.

When your lab results come back, you will be contacted by our office and scheduled for a follow up report of findings appointment. You will never receive a phone message or a postcard simply stating that all was normal. This appointment will be another one-on-one consultation with the doctor explaining the tests and the results in detail. At this time, your plan of care will also be outlined. Spouses and family members are encouraged to attend these appointments as we feel it is important that the whole family understand the care that their loved ones are receiving.

What to expect on your first Acupuncture visit

If you are new to our office, your first visit will be very much the same as described above. You will spend a little more time talking with the acupuncturist about what acupuncture involves and how acupuncture works. It is important that you understand your care and know what to expect.

Based on your current health issues, you will also receive an examination prior to your first treatment. When you receive your first acupuncture treatment, the process will be explained as the treatment is performed.

Most initial treatments entail the use of approximately 8-12 needles placed in your arms and legs. You can expect a quick sensation when the needle is inserted, but within a few seconds you should not even feel the needles in place. Sometimes you won’t even feel the needle as it is inserted; this varies per individual.

The needles remain in place for 20-30 minutes before they are removed. During this time, you should be comfortable and relaxed. Take this time to rest and relax. After 30 minutes, your needles are removed and disposed of.

Following your treatment, you will often notice subtle changes in your condition and your overall energy level. In future treatments, more needles are utilized and specifically target your unique health condition.

An average course of care entails about 4-6 treatments over 2-3 weeks. After that, a few follow-up treatments may be needed over the next few months. Every patient is unique and the care they require is unique as well.
